SUMMARY:Ukrainian Foundation partners with Oregon Folklife Network for Culture Fest 2022
DESCRIPTION:Portland\, Oregon – (October 19\, 2022) – Ukrainian Foundation is kindly inviting everyone to the pysanky workshop and display on November 13th\, 2022. In this workshop participants will be making traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs – pysanky – as holiday ornaments. They will learn the method of wax-resist dyeing. The designs are made with beeswax which is melted in the flame of a candle and applied to the egg using a tool called a “kistka” or “pysachok”. The eggs are dipped into successively darker dyes. At the end of the process\, the beeswax is melted off to reveal a beautiful and colorful design.\n \nThis live workshop is part of Culture Fest\, a partnership with the Oregon Folklife Network that supports traditional arts and culture programming around the state. \nThe event will take place at the First United Methodist Church of Portland (Collins Hall)\, 1838 SW Jefferson St\, Portland\, OR on November 13th\, 2022 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The class is limited to 35 people and requires registration at the following link: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/pysanky-as-holiday-ornaments-workshop-tickets-439891666817. \nOnce you register\, you should receive a confirmation email confirming your spot. If you haven’t received a confirmation\, please contact us at 971-340-7631. \nThe Oregon Folklife Network\, a division of the Museum of Natural and Cultural History at the University of Oregon\, partners annually with arts\, culture\, and heritage organizations around the state for Culture Fest. The partnerships\, which receive funding from the National Endowment for the Arts\, Oregon Arts Commission\, Oregon Cultural Trust\, and Oregon Historical Society\, help organizations of all sizes produce performances\, demonstrations\, and presentations celebrating Oregon’s living cultural heritages. This year\, six collaborative public programs will bring diverse folk and traditional artists to venues around the Willamette Valley. \n“Culture Fest generates paid opportunities for artists and supports deeper connections between local organizations and traditional artists throughout the state\,” said Emily Hartlerode\, associate director at Oregon Folklife Network. “It’s an honor to partner with these organizations in support of Oregon’s diverse cultural life.” \nAbout Ukrainian Foundation  \nUkrainian Foundation was established in 2006 by immigrants from Ukraine to help Ukrainian refugees adjust to their new home in the United States. Our mission is to promote and protect Ukrainian culture\, environment\, and heritage\, provide assistance to the Ukrainian people\, and support democratic Ukraine and her sovereignty. The art of pysanka is one of the oldest folk traditions of Ukraine and an important part of Ukrainian cultural practices by Ukrainians around the world. Pysanky are also known in the US as “Ukrainian Easter eggs” and are part of the world’s cultural heritage. The goal of the pysanka workshop is to teach both ethnic Ukrainians and people of other ethnic and racial backgrounds the basics of this ancient Ukrainian folk art. \nAbout Oregon Folklife Network  \nOregon Folklife Network is administered by the Museum of Natural and Cultural History at the University of Oregon and is the state’s designated folk and traditional arts program. OFN conducts statewide research to document Oregon’s wide variety of living cultural heritages and partners to create public programs to share these diverse traditions. From Native basket\, weavers to hip hop emcees\, from fisher poets to buckaroo gear makers\, Norwegian foods\, Mexican ballet Folklorico\, and more\, there is a world of culture in Oregon. \nAbout the Museum  \nThe Museum of Natural and Cultural History enhances knowledge of Earth’s environments and cultures\, inspiring stewardship of our collective past\, present\, and future. The museum is located at 1680 E. 15th Ave.\, near Hayward Field. Admission is $6 for adults\, $4 for youths and seniors\, and $12 for families (two adults and up to four youths).
