The largest Independence Day of Ukraine in Oregon was celebrated in Portland’s Westmoreland Park. About 5,000 people attended the event over two days, August 24 and 25. It has been traditionally organized by the Ukrainian Foundation since 2015.

Various activities were offered for visitors, depending on their age, hobbies and preferences. For those willing to try folk art, there were master classes on Petrykivka painting, weaving, pysanka’s painting, flower wreaths and traditional motanka dolls.

Technology fans could compete with a robot, developing a techno club, and visitors could also test their level in table tennis.

Festival partners from the Clackamas County Public Health Division and the Multnomah County Health Department spread the information about important preventive health programs, required school vaccinations and free health offices. At the same time, representatives from the Portland Parks & Recreation offered free tree plants.

In addition, at the event it was possible to get information about various programs and services from sponsors Ukrainian Federal Credit Union and Maidan Plaza. Consultations were provided for Ukrainians who came under the United For Ukraine program.

Visitors had a choice of many goodies and a rich musical program. The star of the event was People’s Artist of Ukraine Oksana Bilozir. Together with her, the guests of the event sang well-known authors and folk songs.

Portland, Ore. – (October 19, 2022) – Ukrainian Foundation is kindly inviting everyone to the pysanky workshop and display on November 13th, 2022. In this workshop participants will be making traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs – pysanky – as holiday ornaments. They will learn the method of wax-resist dyeing. The designs are made with beeswax which is melted in the flame of a candle and applied to the egg using a tool called a “kistka” or “pysachok”. The eggs are dipped into successively darker dyes. At the end of the process, the beeswax is melted off to reveal a beautiful and colorful design.

This year, six collaborative public programs will bring diverse folk and traditional artists to venues around the Willamette Valley.

“Culture Fest generates paid opportunities for artists and supports deeper connections between local organizations and traditional artists throughout the state,” said Emily Hartlerode, associate director at Oregon Folklife Network. “It’s an honor to partner with these organizations in support of Oregon’s diverse cultural life.”

About Ukrainian Foundation

Ukrainian Foundation was established in 2006 by immigrants from Ukraine to help Ukrainian refugees adjust to their new home in the United States. Our mission is to promote and protect Ukrainian culture, environment, and heritage, provide assistance to the Ukrainian people, and support democratic Ukraine and her sovereignty. The art of pysanka is one of the oldest folk traditions of Ukraine and an important part of Ukrainian cultural practices by Ukrainians around the world. Pysanky are also known in the US as “Ukrainian Easter eggs” and are part of the world’s cultural heritage. The goal of the pysanka workshop is to teach both ethnic Ukrainians and people of other ethnic and racial backgrounds the basics of this ancient Ukrainian folk art.

About Oregon Folklife Network

Oregon Folklife Network is administered by the Museum of Natural and Cultural History at the University of Oregon and is the state’s designated folk and traditional arts program. From Native basket, weavers to hip hop emcees, from fisher poets to buckaroo gear makers, Norwegian foods, Mexican ballet Folklorico, and more, there is a world of culture in Oregon.
